Selection Process
Fellowships Scholarships Students are awarded on a competitive basis. External interdisciplinary panels of distinguished scholars and practitioners assess the applications. The panels’ recommendations are presented to the Center’s Fellowships Committee of the Board of Trustees, composed of public officials who serve ex officio, citizens appointed by the President of the United States, and citizens from the private sector. The Fellowships Committee of the Board of Trustees makes the final decisions on selection.

The Scholarships Students basic criteria for selection are:

a) significance of the proposed research, including the importance and originality of the project;

b) quality of the proposal in definition, organization, clarity, and scope;

c) capabilities and achievements of the applicant and the likelihood that the applicant will accomplish the proposed project;

d) the relevance of the project to contemporary policy issues.

The Scholarships Students Center welcomes in particular those projects that transcend narrow specialties and methodological issues of interest only within a specific academic discipline. Enzymes are being extensively used as catalysts outside the cell in chemical synthesis, biomedical research, bioremediation and medical therapy. There is great demand in the chemicals industry for novel designer enzymes (and enzyme mimetics) that can catalyze chemical reactions with high efficiency.

We Scholarships Students are studying enzymes that catalyze more than one substrate, as mapping such catalytic promiscuity could be the key to understanding evolution of function within enzyme superfamilies. We Scholarships Students want to harness the insights this provides to design more powerful designer enzymes and biomimetic catalysts based on enzyme active sites.

We Scholarships Students are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated PhD student to computationally model these enzymes. The Scholarships Students catalysts you design will then be tested by our experimental collaborators. You will work primarily on examining catalytic promiscuity within the alkaline phosphatase superfamily, as well as relevant biomimetic catalysts.

Our broader research interests include the multiscale modeling of complex biological and chemical problems, theoretical physical organic and organometallic chemistry, and computational biophysics. Therefore, if you are interested, there will be the possibility of work on larger systems in parallel to your primary project(s).

Required Qualifications

PhD Scholarships Students candidates need to have already obtained a masters degree (or equivalent) in natural sciences prior to beginning a PhD position. If you have familiarity with ab initioQM, QM/MM, DFT or molecular dynamics calculations on biologically and chemically relevant systems this would be great. Finally, while not absolutely essential, previous programming experience is an extra bonus. Of course, where needed, we will provide training as relevant. International students will not be eligible for this funding however they are still welcome to apply for the project but would have to find alternative funding.This PhD position is in the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, starting October 2011. The topic of the PhD is pro-environmental behaviour with an emphasis on climate change mitigation. The goal is to use different behavioural and/or social science research methods to ‘triangulate’ the insights gained from any one particular line of enquiry. This may involve the application of different behavioural theories and models. ‘Triangulation’ here could mean comparing, contrasting, integrating … or demonstrating that integration is not possible. Research methods may include: controlled (lab) experiments; field experiments; cross-sectional surveys; focus groups; interviews; in situ observation. Combinations of experimental and other methods will be encouraged.
The specific research question to be tackled using this mixed methods approach is open. It may focus on a particular behaviour, or pro-environmental behaviour more generally. Applicants are encouraged to propose their own ideas with appropriate reasoning. This may be through an outline research proposal (max. 1-2 pages) which can be attached to the application form. Such proposals should give a sense of how the applicant may use mixed methods as part of an inter-disciplinary enquiry. Examples of research questions include: (1) Does one pro-environmental behaviour make another one more likely (spillover effect) or less likely (saturation effect), and to what extent does this depend on the behavioural context? (2) Are physical visibility or ‘social visibility’ important determinants of pro-environmental behaviour, and to what extent are these attributes correlated? (‘Social visibility’ implies communication through social networks). (3) What influence does excessive choice have on pro-environmental behaviour, and how much is excessive? Eligible applicants should have: (1) an academic background to Masters degree level in a behavioural, public health and/or environmental discipline; (2) experience designing and applying one or more behavioural and/or social science research methods; (3) an interest in inter-disciplinarity and applied research; (4) a willingness to contribute actively to the Tyndall Centre researcher network. Initiative and the ability to think creatively and work independently is also a must. VLIR-UOS funds and facilitates academic cooperation between Flemish higher education institutions and their partners in developing countries through programmes and projects that share and develop knowledge and expertise.

Detail:
This programme provides courses at university level on the most important aspects of aquaculture, for both marine and freshwater organisms. The programme takes a multidisciplinary, interuniversity and international approach, and aims at the acquisition of fundamental knowledge and skills with the main objectives being:
1.to deliver researchers able to design and perform research in various aquaculture fields;
2.to deliver experts who can draw and implement strategies for future development in the aquaculture industry;
3.to form key persons who can act as a nucleus in their local environment through dissemination of their acquired knowledge;
4.to deliver academically trained staff for the aquaculture industry.
The learning outcomes and competencies will differ from student to student as each one will follow his/her own customized program, with a solid foundation in the basic principles of aquatic production. However, the common learning outcomes of the Master of Science in Aquaculture program can be summarized as follows:
1.to have acquired knowledge on the biology and ecology of aquatic organisms (shellfish, finfish, etc.) and to be able to apply this to aquatic production;
2.to be capable of characterising, analysing and evaluating different forms and systems of aquatic production;
3.to understand the interactions between human activity, environmental conditions and aquatic exploitation, and to determine potential ameliorating interventions;

Eligibility:
The programme is open to holders of a bachelor’s degree in exact or applied sciences, equivalent to at least three years’ university studies or a degree in Veterinary Medicine, Civil Engineering or Agricultural Engineering or any related area. Holders of other degrees must follow extra courses. Every application will be carefully examined individually. Some background in aquaculture is recommended.
The applicant must be proficient in the language of the course or training programme, i.e. English. Command of the English language is a very important criterion for admission. With the exception of those who have a diploma (Secondary Education, Academic Bachelor Degree, Master Degree) issued by an institution officially recognized by the Flemish Government, applicants must be able to prove their proficiency in English. Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection, but the most important academic selection criteria are relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the developing country. A joint selection committee of VLIR-UOS and the host university is responsible for selecting scholarships. The host university – not the applicant – forwards the scholarship applications to the VLIR-UOS secretariat if the academic admission requirements are met. Bursaries to Assist with Child-Care Costs to UK and EU Students who are Returning to Higher Educatio

The University is offering six bursaries intended to assist with child-care costs to UK and EU students who are returning to Higher Education study at the University of Edinburgh after a break of at least 3 years. The bursaries will have a maximum value of £3,000 per annum. Bursaries will be awarded for one year in the first instance, however successful applicants pursuing a postgraduate degree programme of more than one year in length will be eligible to apply for a further bursary in subsequent years.
Who may Apply:
1.The bursaries will be awarded to mature UK/EU citizens who are returning to higher education after at least three years away from university. Applicants should already have been offered a full-time postgraduate place at the University of Edinburgh (in any study discipline) and should have firmly accepted that offer.
2.The bursary will be available to help towards the cost of registered or formal childcare, particularly assisting single parents. Formal childcare includes childminders, after school clubs and providers of day-care and education.

The Culinary Trust, philanthropic partner of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, will accept scholarship applications for formal culinary education and independent study and research.
There are 24 scholarships available with a value of nearly $150,000 for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Scholarship selection is based on merit, foodservice work experience, culinary goals, skills and references. In order to qualify:

Applicants to vocational, associates or bachelors degree scholarships do not need to have foodservice experience unless required for admission to the program of study.
Applicants to continuing education & advanced degree scholarships must have two-years of foodservice or related industry experience.

Applicants to vocational, associates and bachelors degree and continuing education scholarships are required to submit a two-page essay (double-spaced) illustrating their culinary goals. Applicants to independent study scholarships will provide a three page project proposal in place of the essay.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Biologicals, a worldwide leader in vaccine development, is committed to innovation especially in the field of adjuvant science and human immunology. In this context, GSK Biologicals intends to initiate a post-doctoral fellowship (2 years) at its Research & Development Department of Pre-clinical Immunology in Rixensart, Belgium.

The main goal of this program is to investigate correlates of protection for viral diseases (i.e. seasonal and pandemic influenza) induced following vaccination.

IMMUNE CORRELATES FOR PROTECTION AGAINST INFLUENZA INFECTION

The aim of this project is to define and compare the determinants of the innate and/or adaptive pathways that lead to natural or vaccine induced protection from influenza infections using various animal models. The developments of new immunological read-outs including cellular mediated immune responses will be an essential aspect of the work. This project will support the design of innovative adjuvanted vaccines capable of inducing protective immunity against influenza infection.

Eligible Candidate

Applicants should hold PhD in immunology or any related fields (e.g. innate immunity, vaccinology, virology). Technical expertise with flow cytometry, virus neutralization assays and cell culture would be appreciated.

A full time doctoral studentship to examine BBC television drama in the regions and nations, The University of Glamorgan

The University of Glamorgan wishes to award a full time doctoral studentship to examine BBC television drama in the regions and nations. The particular focus will be upon Wales and comparable national and regional contexts in the UK, although there may be opportunities to examine wider international parallels where appropriate.

The research will explore the relationship between television drama production developments in Wales and the wider policy context, in which the BBC is committed to sourcing 50% of all network TV programming from beyond the M25 by 2016. The research will, indicatively:

- Analyse the degree to which the success of long-running series (e.g. Dr Who, Torchwood, Merlin, The Sarah Jane Adventures) have enabled the development of a ‘craft base’ of production skills in Wales.
- Detail and analyse the relationships between BBC Wales Cymru and the independent production sector, in Wales and the UK generally
- Consider parallel developments in drama production elsewhere in the ecology of broadcasting e.g. Sianel Pedwar Cymru (S4C).
- Look beyond the immediate context to the ways in which strategic planning for the new developments is taking shape.
- Interview a wide range of production personnel in key areas.

Elligible candidates

Candidates for the studentship must have a good first degree in a relevant subject (e.g. drama, media studies, cultural studies). It is highly desirable that candidates hold, or expect to hold, a MA/MSc in a relevant subject. Candidates should be able to demonstrate the potential to develop and sustain relationships with informants in the research field, and have the requisite presentation skills to produce and deliver collaborative conference papers and journal articles. This award is open to UK and EU students only. Overseas candidates may however wish to explore other postgraduate opportunities within the university at http://postgrad.glam.ac.uk/.

Award

This award covers UK/EU fees £3390 for 2009/10 and £13290, an annual, tax-free stipend. Award holders will be expected to undertake up to a maximum of 6 hours teaching per week during term time as a condition of the award.

The deadline for applications is April 30th, 2010. It is anticipated that the award will be taken up no later than September 30th, 2010.

21. October L'Università of Colorado is the dream of the school Shelbi MacFarlane, and the only out-of-state colleges on their list of half a dozen of which they apply.

MacFarlane - a high school senior from Austin, Texas, who plays volleyball and is studying public relations or communications - told his parents agreed to pay in state tuition, but would be responsible for the rest of the bill covered. A quarter of public school consultant witness an increase in the number of students who delay school due to financial problems.

OpSciTech - Scholarships form the European Union

The OpSciTech Master Course is a two-year program offered by five renowned universities - the Imperial College London, the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Delft University of Technology, Warsaw University of Technology and Université Paris-Sud (together with Institut d´Optique Graduate School). Students enrolled in the program will study in two different countries, spending one year in each.

The OpSciTech Master Course is sponsored by the Erasmus Mundus framework of the European Commission through which students from non-European Union countries are eligible for two-year grants of 21000 Euro per year , out of which a total amount of 10500 Euro has to paid as tuition.

Photonics - Scholarships from the Federal Government of Germany

International students wishing to go for a Master at the Abbe School of Photonics can apply for a scholarship, which is granted in cooperation with partners from the German Optics & Photonics industry, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the County of Thuringia.

Scholarships include a stipend of 715 Euro per month, covering of university fees, free local transport and health insurance. In addition, a language course is reimbursed.

Scholarships are restricted to international students. For 2010/2011 a total amount of approx. 33 scholarships is available for these students.
